Hello! This is my Greenland OC and her information! You can use her however you want as long as you credit me and link back here.

Country Information:

Official Country Name: Greenland (Kalaallit Nunaat) Meaning: "Land of People"

Capitol: Nuuk, which is also the largest city

Languages: Greenlandic (Part of the Eskimo family of languages), Danish, some English. The official language was Danish until 2009 when it was changed to Greenlandic.

Government: Democratic Parliamentary within the Danish monarchy

Legal System: Home rule, follows Danish laws when applicable and runs internal affairs.

National Symbols: Animal is the polar bear, colors are red and white

Human Information:

Name: Jaati Hammond-Køhler

Meaning: Jaati is a younger spelling of the name Jâte. It is sort of a norse form of an inuit name and means “my little beloved” or “My sweet sister”. Hammond is the last name of Aleqa Hammond, who was the 5th prime minister of Greenland, the first woman Prime Minister in Greenland, and the first woman leader of her political party. Køhler is Denmark's human last name (at least in part of the fandom, if you use a different name for him, imagine that here).

Age Appearance: 15

Gender: Female

Birthday: May 1st (The day that home rule came into effect in 1979)

About Them:

Personality: Greenland is a boisterous and loud girl that always speaks her mind.

She can be very stubborn, and is socially awkward. She is considered to be wild and takes after Denmark.

She is very impatient, and is easily distracted and excited.

She doesn’t see people that often, and perhaps that is why she is so wound up when she does. Greenland is not a fan of strangers.

When she's alone, she is less vocal.

82% of her land is covered in ice, and this could be the reason as to why she comes off as mean when making first impressions. It can be inferred that she was much more green and less "Icy" during her early childhood. Exposure to the outside world changed her.

Hobbies: Greenland spends most of her time hunting, both for practical purposes as well as fun. She depends on her kills for food and skins. She loves being out in the wilds of her lands, enjoying the solitude. Though she is never truly alone, since she always takes on of her sled dogs with her wherever she goes. Greenland participates in dogsledding as well. When she is at home, she is creating something, most often carving, sometimes painting. She has a very creative and busy mind, but rarely finishes any of her pieces. Greenland used to sew her own clothes, but has recently started wearing imported clothing.

Physical Attributes:

Description: Greenland has darker skin than the other nordic countries. She also has silky black hair that she keeps back in a messy ponytail most of the time. She is muscular, and has broad shoulders and wide hips.

Height: 5ft 4in

Weight: 125 lbs

Outfit: Wears a red sweater with traditional designs on it. Her pants are black and made of seal skin. Her coat is brown and lined with fur.

Family and Foreign Relationships:

Nordics in general: Greenland is part of the Nordic council, though she was the last one of the family to gain membership. She loves her family, but often feels ostracized and out of place because of her different heritage, culture, and looks.

Denmark: Greenland is a danish territory, and has only recently gotten her autonomy from him. They are very much alike, and she loves him a lot. The most conflict in their relationship comes from him often ignoring her Inuit heritage and treating her like she is simply danish. Greenland wants to leave him and become her own country, but she relies on him too much right now. They get along great most of the time, and as she is growing older, Denmark is starting to see her as less of a child. She calls him dad most of the time and he calls her Greeny, or daughter or just “kid”.

Norway: Greenland was originally a Norwegian territory (until 1814) and Norway is the one that found her and brought her to the continent as a child. She calls Norway big brother or Norge, and he calls her little sister. They get along well enough, and she is always thankful to him for introducing her to the outside world and taking care of her when she was very young. Norway is sometimes annoyed by her loud behavior, but still proud.

Iceland: Greenland and Iceland call each other brother and sister, and they spend a time together on a regular basis. Greenland is somewhat jealous of him, since he is his own country and she is still a territory. They try not to let that get in the way of their relationship though. They grew up in Denmark’s house together and are around the same age. Iceland knows that she is jealous of him and is embarrassed by it, and he constantly tries to treat her like his equal to make up for it.

Faroe Islands: Faroe and Greenland are very close and are rarely without each other. Faroe is a quieter counterpart to Greenland, and the two often get up to mischief and pranks. They grew up with Iceland, but have felt separated from him in more recent years. They refer to each other as sister.

Finland: Greenland is friendly with Finland, and sometimes calls him uncle.

Sweden: Greenland is pretty scared of Sweden, and is off put by how silent he can be. 14% of her imports come from Sweden, so they mostly have a business relationship.

Canada: Greenland and Canada both have Inuit heritage, and they spend their time together engaging in hunting of dogsledding. She calls him cousin. They have a dispute over who owns Hans Island, but no major bad blood.

America: America occupied and defended Greenland during the second world war. Greenland was grateful that he helped protect her, but he was also very rude and acted like he owned her house. He offered to buy her, and Greenland was incredibly insulted.

Misc: Greenland left the EU because of a dispute about fishing rights. Since her foreign affairs are handled by Denmark, she hasn’t met many other countries and certainly isn’t close with them. She is friendly to most until they upset her.

Brief History:

Prehistory: Before Greenland was born, there were a few attempts at settling in her land. Eskimos from the lands in Canada traveled to northern Greenland and set up bases. Erik the Red, from Iceland, is credited with the beginning of Norse settlements in Greenland in the 980s.

Early years: Norwegian colonization first began in the year 985 and the colonies lasted until the 1450s. Some suspect that it was because of the harshly cold climate and the Norwegian’s refusal to adapt to their new surroundings. At the same time as the Norwegian colonies, was the Inuit Thule culture. Greenland was first born with them, around the year 1200, in the north area of her lands.

Colonization: Greenland was not brought to live with the Nordics until 1728, when she was brought back to Norway as proof of colonization and conversion to Lutheranism. Greenland officially became a Danish colony in 1775. She lived in Denmark and Norway’s house with Iceland and Faroe until 1814, when they became solely Danish territories. Greenland was still made up of tiny and isolated colonies and tribes, and she was still a very young girl.

Custody Battle: It was not until the late 1800s that Greenland truly began to grow. In 1905, Norway and Denmark argued claims to Greenland, and the dispute was not settled until 1933, when the international court ruled that Greenland was a danish colony. At this point, Greenland was spending more time on her own lands rather than in Denmark’s house.

World War II: As part of the Kingdom of Denmark, Greenland followed his lead on the international affairs during the war. The axis powers occupied Denmark from 1940-45, and he eventually signed with the US to allow the Allies to have a base in Greenland, not being able to remain properly defending Greenland at the time. In 1946, America offered to buy Greenland from Denmark, but Denmark declined. American presence official stopped in 1951.

Gaining Independence: 1953 was when Greenland went from being that of a colony to an autonomous province. This was the start of modernization in Greenland, as well as becoming a more urban country. Greenland became larger and more independent through the modernization, and had conflicts with Denmark over well meaning reforms that ignored her Inuit culture. In 1979, Greenland gained home rule, and is now able to govern internal affairs with Greenlandic laws and government. 2008 marked another step towards independence from Denmark.

Facts/Trivia:
-There are hot springs in Greenland!

-Greenland had a closed and self sufficient economy until WWII, another reason why she is bitter about the events of the war. She now has to rely on Denmark and other countries a lot more, and wishes that she could be self sufficient again.

-Human AU: Jaati is that "animal girl" in the 3rd grade that lives for the field trips to the zoo.

-Greenland is the youngest of her siblings (Faroe Islands and Iceland)

-Most countries have roads and know how to drive. Greenland does not, she travels by dogsled and boat.

- Her favorite color is bright blue! She loves bright colors in general, particularly ones that appear in the northern lights, which you can see at night all year round from her country.
